Me and my Iguanas
Vets and Health problems
It is very important to find a reptile vet. An ordinary vet for cats and dogs will not be good enough. You need someone that knows reptiles in and out. Only a reptile vet can give the proper care and help that you iguana is going to need. Don't think that your iguana wont need to see a vet because things do happen and go wrong. Please find a good vet before you get an iguana and if you already own one then find a vet right now. Here are a couple of places that can help you find one.
You can also try contacting your local herp society.
Health problems
Burns
Burns can be caused from many different things but the most common is a heat rock and heat lights. Burns that are minor can be treated by soaking your iguana in providone iodine and applying a burn ointment. For serious burns you will need to have your iguana seen by a vet.
Claw torn off
If the claw of your iguana gets ripped out then you need to soak the toe in providone iodine for a few minutes and then apply an antibiotic ointment. Do this for several days. If you notice any swollen or the toe doesn't seem to be healing then get your ig to a vet.
Abscesses
Abscesses need to be treated by a vet. He will probably give an antibiotic and the remove it.
Tail loss
Normally if the this happens, Then tail will grow back but sometime it will not. If it does grow back it is a long process and the tail will never be the same as the original. If this happens, first soak your iguana in bath with providone iodine. You want the water to be a medium tea color. Do this for about 15-20 minutes. If your ig poops in the tub, refill it with fresh water and providone iodine. At night put a antibiotic ointment on the stump. Do this every day until the wound id healed. Your iguana will be off balance for a while because they use their tails to balance.
Diarrhea
Diarrhea can be caused from parasite infections like pin or hook worm. You need to get a fecal sample the vet to find out if and what kind of infection it is.
Respiratory infections
This is usually caused by the temps not being at the right degrees. If you see your iguana gaping, breathing with the mouth open, weezing, or swollen body then you need to get them to the vet. Make sure that all your temps are correct and there is no drafts blowing in to the cage. How ever, be sure that there is ventilation in the cage.
Salmonella and E. Coli
These can be passed from reptile to human. If you protect your self from this you should not have a problem. Remember that humans and animals have a small amount of this in their body as well. So don't freak out but always take care to be sure you don't get sick from this. First if you have children under the age of 5 do not get a reptile. If your immune system is weak or if you are elderly or have an elderly person living with you do not get a reptile. Its harder to fight off and recover if you fall into these categories. Make sure to wash your hands after holding a reptile. When cleaning the cages, use gloves and make sure to wash everything thorough. If you spill something on the floor or any where make sure to clean it up well. Do not kiss your reptile. I have heard and seen people doing this and I do not recommend it. If you get scratched or bitten use rubbing alcohol or something just as good to clean the wound. If you notice any infection, get to a doctor. If bitten, inform the doctor of Gram positive and Gram negative. It is a type of bacteria that some doctors are not aware of that iguanas can have. Please don't feel scared of all this. I have had iguanas for a long time and know of others that has 10+ years with iguanas that has never had a problem. If you are careful and responsible everything is usually fine.
Mites
Mites are very hard to get rid of. First, give your iguana a bath. This will get rid of some mites and you can wash them down the drain. Next fill the bath tub with water and povidone iodine. The bath water should be a medium tea color. Soak the iguana for about 20-30 minutes refreshing the water to keep it around 85 degrees. When done soaking check over the iguana for any more mites. Then saturate a cloth with povidone iodine and apply it to all the joints between the legs and body. When done, put your iguana in a plain bath to rinse clean. For the cage, completely wash down every thing including food dishes. Use hot soapy water if the cage is made of wood. If the cage is made of glass then use a water bleach solution but rinse completely. Put a pest strip in the cage away from where the iguana can come in to contact with it. You may need to do this more then once. For a more detailed help on this, click here.

Now the most common health problems are:
Metabolic Bone Disease ( MBD )
MBD is basically the weakening of the bones do to not having enough calcium in the body. If it is caught soon enough it can be reversed with the help of a vet. This is a very painful death for an iguana. The signs to look for is bumps or swelling on the back and tail, knobs on the legs, swelling of the jaw, jerking when walking, tremors and twitches, broken bones, and in severe cases, not being able to walk. The is extremely common in iguanas and very serious. Please do not let this happen to your iguana. If you feed the proper diet and provide the proper lighting and heat this will not be a problem.
Kidney failure
The is generally caused by feeding animal protein, dry commercial diets, and not enough water. The signs for this are so easy to miss that by the time you realize it, its to late. The iguana usually dies very soon after. The things to look for is loosing weight even if they are eating, anorexia, swollen belly, drinking a lot or very little, urates are thick and yellow and crystals may be seen, swollen neck, swollen dewlap, loss of muscle tone, and eyes may swell or droop. A vet can check for this disease and if caught early enough, possibly reverse it.
